Avoiding Acting Scams

Scam Avoidance 101 and What To Do If It's Too Late
by Penny McCanles

Scams abound in the acting and modeling businesses. Why? Probably because we're so incredibly desperate for jobs and gigs that we're willing to overlook the danger signs. However, forfeiting common sense is a really bad idea, because these scams could mean you won't get paid or that the work you've done may be deep-sixed, consigned to a professional bone yard. And who needs that?

Monologue Do's and Dont's

an article by Jeremy Whelan

In a group casting session last weekend I watched 120 monologues in two and a half days. A good local theatre was auditioning for a Festival of Independent Theatre. Short original plays by local writers affiliated with the theatre's writer's development program. I was asked to direct one of them. Finding Free Monologues

WANTED: Single, intelligent actor seeks 1 to 2 minute acting monologue for long term relationship. Must have a comedic or dramatic style with a lot of emotional depth.

Cry On Cue

Crying on Cue: Part I
by ActorTips Coach Janus

"It is required of me to break down whilst reading a monologue, and I am struggling with this proposal. If you could send me some tips on crying, I would appreciate it. Kind regards, Miss Tara"

FIRST, CONSIDER NOT CRYING

"Breaking down" does not necessarily mean crying. Watch TV News. Watch people in horrifying situations. Not all of them cry. Fighting hard not to cry is a great deal more moving than crying. The best coach I had told me NOT to cry. Leave the crying up to the audience. Fight the tears. It's much more effective.

Let the lower lip quiver. Fight it. Quiver. Fight. Clamp your lips tightly together (as if mimicking someone without teeth.
